Prestwick Airport

War. What is it good for? Subsidising Scottish Airports it seems.

Prestwick Airport is one of Scotland’s smaller airports, so why is it here?

Well, ignoring the obvious climate harms of air travel, Prestwick Airport is included for one simple reason: it facilitates the activities of one of the world’s greatest polluters (and killers), the US military.

The US military has an estimated 800 military bases around the world, such is the all-consuming power of this global hegemon. And when you are so invested in keeping the war machine going, this comes at a considerable cost. If it were a country, the US Military would be the 55th biggest emitter of C02

Prestwick Airport functions as a stop-over point for the US military, with stoppages increasing during the Trump presidency. Eyebrows have also been raised at military personnel staying at nearby Trump Turnberry during stop-overs.

Disgracefully, Prestwick has been used during so-called “extraordinary rendition” exercises – otherwise known as government-sponsored kidnap without any recourse to due process. An investigation into this is still ongoing.

Since 2013, the airport has been owned by the Scottish Government, saving it from financial implosion. But as acknowledged by Transport Secretary Michael Matheson, the current biggest source of income for the ailing airport is the US military. When pressed on this fairly obvious moral issue, Nicola Sturgeon has been dismissive, saying “that the fact that Prestwick Airport provides fixed-base operations and refuelling facilities for military flights is neither new nor is it a revelation”. The Scottish Government has also refused to suspend US use of the airport.

We may, however, note that the Scottish Government seem to have set in place a process whereby Prestwick Airport is financially dependent upon the activities of the US military. It would also be reasonable to expect a publicly owned body not to sell itself out to the war machine. We do not yet know how this will change under the Biden Administration.

A preferred bidder for the airport has now been found, after the previous preferred bidder pulled out. The identity of the preferred bidder remains to be seen and although it would be quite shocking, the Scottish Government previously refused to rule out a sale to the US military. We could hope that the new owner will be a mythical benevolent corporation keen to put the needs of people over profit. We will not be holding our breath though.
